- Was denied entrance into Cambridge University because school officials feared she would leave mid-term to pursue her acting career. Upon being denied, she indeed decided to concentrate on acting.
- Began dating Harry Potter actor Kenneth Branagh in 1994… while fellow Harry Potter actress Emma Thompson was married to him. Thompson and Branagh divorced the following year, allowing him to move in with Bonham Carter. The pair broke up in 1999.
- Dated Steve Martin.
- Became romantically involved with her director Tim Burton after their Planet of the Apes wrapped. Instead of moving in with her in her Hampstead home in London, Burton bought two next-door houses which the couple both share today. The two are not married, but have two children together.
- Speaks French fluently.
- In August 2008, four of her relatives were killed in a safari bus crash in South Africa, and she was given indefinite leave from filming Terminator Salvation, returning later to complete filming.
- She based her performance of Marla Singer in Fight Club on Judy Garland in the later stages of her life.
- A fight between her and Gary Oldman in the Order of the Phoenix was cut from the final film. She had been training for three weeks for the fight.
- Underwent extensive vocal lessons and studied baking in preparation for her role in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
- Was cast as Bellatrix Lestrange after Helen McCrory became pregnant. She returned for the Half-Blood Prince, opposite McCrory as her sister Narcissa Malfoy. Ironically, Bonham Carter was able to be in this scene because it was scheduled to be filmed after she gave birth to her own child.
- Her role in Alice in Wonderland consists of two merged roles - the Queen of Hearts from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and the Red Queen from Through the Looking Glass.
- Though she is widely-recognized for acting in Tim Burton films, Helena was first known as the “corset queen”; she starred in a number of widely-praised period films.
